How to Sign a PDF on Android Without Uploading It

You can sign a PDF on Android in about a minute. The quickest private route is your phone's browser: open a local signing tool, add your signature, place it on the page and save the file. You can also use a signing app such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, or Chrome's own markup tools if you only need a visible mark. Below, each method is explained step by step, with notes on what Singapore law says about the result.

Sign a PDF in your browser

TL;DR

  • Fastest, most private: use a browser-based signer that processes the file on your phone. Our Sign PDF tool works this way, so your document is not uploaded.
  • App route: Adobe Acrobat Reader's Fill & Sign works on Android, but the PDF must be unprotected.
  • Chrome markup is not a signature: Chrome for Android can draw on a PDF through Google Drive, but it does not support digital signing.
  • Singapore: an electronic signature can have the same legal effect as a handwritten one if the conditions are met. For high-value documents, a stronger Secure Electronic Signature may be the better fit.

Three ways to sign a PDF on Android

Most people searching for this want one of three things: sign without installing anything, sign with a well-known app, or just scribble a name on a form. Each has trade-offs.

MethodNeeds an app?File stays on your device?Best for
Browser-based signer (FlowPDF)NoYes, processed locally in the browserContracts, NDAs, forms with personal data
Adobe Acrobat Reader (Fill & Sign)YesDepends on how you open and save the filePeople who already use Acrobat
Chrome and Google Drive markupNo (Drive handles editing)File is passed to Google DriveQuick visual marks, not formal signing

The sections below take them in turn.

Method 1: Sign in your Android browser, no upload

If the document is a tenancy draft, an employment contract or anything with your NRIC number on it, you may not want it going to a stranger's server. A browser-based tool that does the work on your phone avoids that question.

FlowPDF runs its signing locally. Your file is opened in the browser tab, and nothing is sent to a server. It is free, with no account, no watermark and no subscription.

  1. Open Chrome (or Samsung Internet, or Firefox) on your phone and go to flowpdf.free/sign-pdf.
  2. Choose your PDF. Pick it from your Downloads folder, Files, or wherever the email attachment was saved.
  3. Create your signature on the screen.
  4. Place it where it belongs on the page and resize it to fit the signature line.
  5. Save the signed PDF back to your phone.

A few practical tips:

  • Use landscape mode for long forms. A wider screen makes it easier to line up the signature with the line.
  • Zoom in before placing. Pinch to zoom so the signature does not overlap printed text.
  • Sign with a fingertip or a stylus. A stylus on a Galaxy Note or Tab gives a cleaner result, but a finger is fine for most forms.
  • Keep the original. Save the signed copy under a new name so you can always return to the unsigned version.

If you want a deeper look at how this works on desktop and mobile browsers, see our guide to signing PDFs in your browser without uploads.

Why "no upload" matters

Many online signers send your file to a server, process it there and send it back. That can be fine for a menu or a flyer. For a contract with salary figures, an ID number or a medical detail, keeping the file on your device removes a whole category of worry: where it is stored, who can access it and how long it stays. Local processing means there is simply no copy elsewhere.

Method 2: Sign with Adobe Acrobat Reader

Adobe's free Android app has a Fill & Sign feature, and it is the route most guides describe. According to Android Central's walkthrough, you install Acrobat Reader, open a PDF from your device or Google Drive, tap the blue pencil and choose Fill & Sign. The same source notes the PDF must be unprotected, so a file locked with an owner password may refuse edits until it is unlocked.

This works well if you already have the app and an Adobe account. The drawbacks are the install, the sign-in prompts and the fact that you are working inside a larger product when you only need one signature. If you want to skip those, our guide to signing locally without Adobe covers the alternative.

If Acrobat tells you it cannot edit the file, the PDF is probably protected. You can remove a password you know using our unlock tool in the full list of FlowPDF tools, then sign the unlocked copy.

Method 3: Chrome and Google Drive markup (what it can and cannot do)

Chrome for Android opens PDFs directly. Google's help page explains that Chrome passes the document to Google Drive for editing, where you get markup tools such as a pen, highlighter and eraser. Technically, you can draw your name with the pen and call it signed.

There is an important limit. Android Police reported that the native PDF features in Chrome for Android do not currently support digital signing and are limited to visual markup. A pen line is a drawing on the page. It is not tied to you or to the document in any way a third party can check.

That is acceptable for a school permission slip or a gym form. It is a weak choice for a contract. Students comparing tools for coursework will find a broader overview in this guide to free PDF editors for students, which also looks at the limits of Chrome's built-in options. For a deeper comparison of Chrome's built-in editing against a full editor, read our piece on editing PDFs in Chrome without uploading.

Save and share the signed PDF

Signing is half the job. You still have to get the file to the other person without losing it in a folder.

Find the file. If you opened the PDF in Chrome, Google says you can download it by opening the More menu in the PDF and tapping Download. Downloaded files are listed under Chrome's More menu, then Downloads, according to Chrome Help.

Send it by app. In Files by Google, open the PDF from Recents or search for it, then tap Share to send it to another app such as email or a messaging app. The More menu also lets you move or copy the file, as described in the Files by Google help page.

Send it to someone nearby. For a landlord or colleague standing next to you, Quick Share in Files by Google works: open Files, tap Quick Share, select the PDF, choose the nearby device and have the other person accept. Nothing travels through email.

Shrink it if it is too big. Scans and photos can make a PDF heavy. If an email bounces, run it through Compress PDF, which also processes the file on your device.

Are signed PDFs legally valid in Singapore?

In most everyday cases, yes. Singapore's Electronic Transactions Act (ETA) recognizes electronic signatures as having the same legal effect and validity as handwritten ones when specified conditions are met, as the Singapore Government Developer Portal explains. The Act says the requirement for a signature is satisfied when the method identifies the person and indicates their intention, and the method is either reliable for the purpose or proven to do those two things, per the Act itself.

Ordinary vs Secure Electronic Signatures

The ETA splits e-signatures into two categories: Ordinary Electronic Signatures (OES) and Secure Electronic Signatures (SES). The difference shows up when someone disputes the signature. With an SES, the burden of proof falls on the person disputing it to show tampering or misuse. With an OES, the burden is reversed, according to the government developer portal.

The Act defines a secure electronic signature using criteria including that it is unique to the signer, identifies them, is under their sole control and is linked to the record so that changing the record invalidates the signature. Sign with Singpass explains that a certificate-based digital signature can qualify as an SES, while a pasted signature image or typed name is generally an OES.

Ordinary and secure signature criteria compared

Which one do you need?

Government guidance recommends reserving SES for high-risk or high-value transactions such as tenancy agreements, statutory declarations or funding contracts, per the same developer portal page. For routine paperwork such as a quotation, a consent form, a lease addendum between friendly parties or an internal approval, a signature image placed on the PDF is the usual OES approach.

What this means for a signature you place in FlowPDF: it is an image of your signature added to the page. It is not a certificate-backed digital signature, so treat it as an ordinary signature. If the other party, a regulator or your lawyer asks for an SES, use a certificate-based service for that document instead. Our article on electronic versus digital signatures in Singapore goes through the difference in more detail.

If you are unsure which category a contract needs, ask the person who drafted it, or a lawyer for anything involving property or large sums. A signing tool cannot decide that for you.

Our perspective

We built FlowPDF around one belief: a signature should not require handing your document to a third party. Most Android signing advice points you to an app, an account and a cloud service. For a quick form that is a lot of steps, and for a sensitive contract it is a lot of exposure.

So we process everything in your browser. Your file is opened on your phone, edited on your phone and saved to your phone. We do not ask for a sign-up, show a watermark on your output or charge for any tool. We would rather you spend your minute signing than creating an account.

We are also clear about limits. FlowPDF places your signature on the page, which makes it an ordinary electronic signature. We do not offer certificate-backed digital signatures, and if your document needs one, you should use a service that does. Choose the tool that fits the weight of the document, not the one that is easiest to find.

When you sign many documents, or for a business

If you collect signatures from customers all day, a one-off phone workflow is not the best fit. Businesses that handle repeat paperwork such as intake forms often prefer built-in e-signatures for consent forms, where the signing step sits inside the software they already use, instead of signing each file by hand.

For occasional signing, such as a freelancer returning a contract, a student submitting a form or a parent approving a school document, the browser method is simpler. You can also prepare the file first: merge several PDFs into a single contract pack, remove pages you do not need, or redact sensitive details before sending a copy to someone who does not need to see them.

Troubleshooting signing on Android

The signature looks tiny or off the line. Zoom in before placing, then resize. On a phone, small drags move the signature by a lot.

The PDF will not open or edit. It may be password-protected or restricted. Adobe's guidance, as relayed by Android Central, is that the PDF must be unprotected. If you have the password, unlock a copy first.

It is a form with fields. For fields such as name, date and address, use a form-filling tool and then add your signature last, so you do not need to redo it. The same approach works on iOS; see our guide to filling PDFs on iPhone without installing an app.

The document is a photo, not a PDF. Convert the image to a PDF first, then sign it.

Your colleague uses an iPhone. The steps differ slightly there, and we cover them in how to sign a PDF on iPhone.

Try it on your phone

FlowPDF's Sign PDF works in your Android browser with no upload, no account and no watermark. If you need more than a signature, the same site covers editing, merging, splitting and compressing, all free: see the full tool list.

FAQ

Can I sign a PDF on Android without installing an app?

Yes. Open a browser-based signer in Chrome, choose your PDF, add your signature and save it. Chrome can also open PDFs and hand them to Google Drive for pen and highlighter markup, but that is a visual mark, not a digital signature.

Is a signature I draw on my phone legally valid in Singapore?

Often yes. The Electronic Transactions Act gives electronic signatures the same legal effect as handwritten ones when the conditions are met. For high-value or high-risk documents such as tenancy agreements or statutory declarations, government guidance points to Secure Electronic Signatures instead.

Is it safe to sign a confidential PDF on my phone?

It is safest when the file never leaves your device. A signer that processes locally in the browser does not upload the document to a server. Whatever you use, keep the signed copy somewhere only you can access, and share it only with the intended recipient.

Why can't I edit or sign my PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader?

The most common cause is that the PDF is protected. Fill & Sign needs an unprotected file. If you know the password, unlock a copy and try again.

How do I send the signed PDF to someone?

Open the file in Files by Google and tap Share to pick an email or messaging app. If the person is next to you, Quick Share sends it directly to their device after they accept.
