You can crop PDF pages in a browser, in Preview on a Mac or iPhone, in Adobe Acrobat, or in a free desktop reader like SumatraPDF. The method matters less than two checks: does the tool apply the crop to one page or all of them, and does it upload your file to a server? This guide covers both, plus a point most guides skip: a normal crop hides content but does not delete it.
TL;DR
- Cropping a PDF changes the visible area of each page. It does not shrink the file, and the hidden margins usually stay inside it.
- For a quick, private crop, use a browser tool that works locally, such as our Crop PDF tool. Your file stays on your device.
- Mac users can crop in Preview. iPhone users can crop in the Preview-style markup tools. Acrobat can apply one crop to all pages or a page range.
- If the hidden area contains private details, cropping is not enough. Redact the content instead.
- If you want a smaller file, crop first, then compress.

What cropping does to a PDF page
Every PDF page has boxes that describe its size. The one that matters here is the CropBox. It sets the area that standard PDF viewers show. When you crop, most tools change that box. They do not cut anything out of the page itself.
This is documented in the SumatraPDF guide to cropping margins. It explains that a crop changes the visible area while the underlying content stays stored in the file.
Three practical results follow:
- The file size usually stays the same. The PDF-XChange Editor manual says standard cropping does not reduce file size, because it adjusts the display window and does not delete the hidden content.
- The hidden content can sometimes be recovered. Someone with the right software can reset the crop and see what you trimmed. Treat a crop as a layout change, not as a way to hide anything sensitive.
- Printing and reading change right away. Narrow margins make text larger on a phone or tablet. They also help when you print a scanned page that has a thick border.
If you do need the margin content gone for good, SumatraPDF has a trim command that deletes content lying completely outside a box you specify. For a sensitive item such as an ID number or an address inside the page, use a redaction tool. More on that below.
Crop PDF pages in your browser without uploading
Most top-ranking online croppers ask you to upload the file, and some limit how many files or tasks you can run per hour on the free plan. That is fine for a menu or a flyer. It is a poor fit for a contract, a payslip, a medical letter or a scanned passport page.
A local browser tool avoids the problem. The page loads, your PDF opens in the browser's own memory, and the crop is applied on your device. Nothing travels to a server. You can read how this works on our page about how FlowPDF processes PDFs locally.
Here is the usual flow with our free Crop PDF tool:
- Open the tool and choose your PDF from your device.
- Draw or adjust the crop area on the page so it covers only what you want to keep.
- Decide whether the crop applies to one page or to the whole document.
- Download the cropped PDF.
No account, no watermark and no payment are involved. Always open the result and flip through every page before you send it.
When one crop for all pages works
A single crop for every page suits documents with consistent layouts: slides exported from a presentation, a scanned book chapter, or a report with uniform margins. Pick the whole-document option, set the frame once, and check the first, middle and last pages.
When to crop pages separately
Mixed documents need page-by-page crops. A portrait letter followed by a landscape table, or a scan where some pages sit off-center, will lose text if you apply one frame to all of them. Handle each page, or split the file into groups with the same layout, crop each group, then merge the parts again.

Crop a PDF on a Mac with Preview
You do not need Acrobat on a Mac. Apple's Preview guide confirms that Preview can crop a PDF page to hide content. In short:
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- Show the Markup toolbar and choose the Rectangular Selection tool.
- Drag over the area you want to keep.
- Choose Tools, then Crop.
Preview works well for a single page. It is slower when you need the same crop across fifty pages, because you handle pages one at a time. If that is your job, a browser tool with an all-pages option saves time.
One extra tip for Mac users: if the page also comes out sideways, fix the rotation before cropping. Our guide to rotating PDFs on Mac covers Preview and a private browser fix.
Documents that come from CAD often arrive with large empty borders. Setting the export area correctly at the source avoids cropping later, and the AutoCAD PDF export settings are worth a look if you produce drawings.
Crop a PDF on an iPhone
Apple's Singapore iPhone instructions describe the flow:
- Open the PDF in the app and scroll to the page.
- Tap the crop control.
- Drag the blue handles to select the area you want.
- Tap Crop. If Crop does not appear, tap inside the selected area.
Made a mistake? The same page notes that you can use Undo to reverse a change. That is a good reason to keep the original file until you are happy with the result.
Crop PDF pages in Adobe Acrobat
Acrobat is the standard desktop option, and it handles page ranges well. A university knowledge base guide to Acrobat gives these steps:
- Open the PDF in Acrobat and choose Tools, then Edit PDF.
- Click Crop Pages. A selection rectangle appears.
- Drag the rectangle over the area you want to keep.
- Double-click inside it, or press Enter, to open the Set Page Boxes dialog.
- Adjust the Top, Left, Right and Bottom margins if needed.
- Under Page Range, choose all pages, selected pages, or a custom range such as pages 2 to 5, then click OK.
Acrobat is a paid product for these features, and it is not available in every setting. If you have no licence, one of the other methods here does the same job.
Crop with a free desktop reader
SumatraPDF, a free reader for Windows, has a crop feature as well. Its documentation says you can apply the same crop to every page. It also provides the trim command mentioned above, for when you want the outside content removed from the file.
If you handle PDFs often and prefer an installed app, this is a sound option. For one-off jobs, a browser tool is quicker because there is nothing to install.
How to cut out part of a PDF page
People use the phrase cut out part of a PDF page for three different goals. Each has a different answer.
| Your goal | What to use | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Remove margins or a border | Crop | Changes the visible area. The content usually stays in the file. |
| Remove a whole page | Remove pages | The page is deleted from the file. |
| Keep only certain pages | Extract pages | A new PDF with just those pages. |
| Hide a name, number or address | Redact | The content is removed, not just covered. |
If you only need fewer pages, our guide to deleting PDF pages without uploading shows several routes. If you want to pull a section out of a long document, split the file.
One warning: drawing a black box over text is not redaction. The text can still sit underneath and be copied. Use a real redaction tool, then test by trying to select and copy the area.
Why you can't crop your PDF
When the crop option fails or does nothing, the cause is usually one of these.
- The file is protected. A PDF with an owner password can block editing, including page changes. If you own the document, unlock it with the password first. We offer an unlock tool for files you have the right to open.
- The page is a scan. A scanned page is an image. Cropping still works, but some tools treat images differently. If the crop looks right but the file is as large as before, that is expected.
- You applied the crop to the wrong range. In Acrobat, check the Page Range box in the dialog. Many tools default to the current page only.
- The viewer ignores the crop. Some apps display the full page regardless of the CropBox. Open the result in a second viewer to check.
- The crop looks undone after saving. Make sure you saved a new file, or used the download button, and not just closed the preview.
- The tool is not available on your device. Phone apps and web tools differ. If one fails, try another method from this guide.
Does cropping make a PDF smaller?
Usually not. As noted above, a standard crop only changes the display window. If your goal is a smaller file for email or an upload form, crop first, then compress. The PDF-XChange manual points to an optimize or save-as-optimized step for real size reduction. In a browser, our Compress PDF tool does that locally. If you have a hard limit, such as 200 KB, see our guide to shrinking PDFs to 200 KB.
Cropping does not harm readability when you leave a small safe margin. Keep a few millimeters of white space around the text so printers and viewers do not clip letters.
Check privacy before you crop a sensitive document
In Singapore, the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) expects organisations to protect personal data they hold. Its guide on disposing of personal data, revised 20 January 2017, says organisations must make reasonable security arrangements to protect personal data in their possession or control. It also stresses that the duty covers the whole data life cycle, including copies and transformations made from the original file. A cropped copy of a payslip is still a payslip.
The PDPC's guide to securing personal data in electronic medium adds two points. It advises encryption or password protection for sensitive documents when standard secure channels are not available. It also says personal data should be disposed of when it is no longer needed for a business or legal purpose, in a way that prevents recovery or disclosure.
In practice, before you pick a free cropper, ask these questions:
- Does the file leave my device? If the tool says upload, the file goes to a server. Local tools say that processing happens in the browser or on your machine.
- Is there a limit or a signup? Hourly caps and accounts add friction and can mean your file is tied to your identity.
- What is the tool's policy for deleting files? If you must upload, read it first.
- Is the crop really removing what I need removed? If not, use redaction.
- Should the output be protected? If you will email the cropped file, add a password with a local protect tool.
This is general guidance, not legal advice. If you handle customer or employee data at work, check with your company's data protection officer.
Our perspective: crop locally, and know what stays in the file
We built FlowPDF around one idea: ordinary PDF jobs should not require handing your document to a stranger's server. Cropping is a good example. It looks harmless, yet the files people crop are often scans of IDs, contracts, forms and statements.
Two habits make the biggest difference. First, use a tool that processes the file in your browser, so there is no copy to worry about afterward. Second, remember that a crop is a visual change. If something in the margin must not be seen by the recipient, redact it, or remove the page. Then open the final file and check it yourself.
We also think free should mean free: no watermark on the output, no signup, no hourly cap. People crop a PDF in a spare minute, and the tool should respect that.

Frequently asked questions
Can you crop pages in a PDF?
Yes. Preview on a Mac can crop a PDF page, Acrobat can crop with a page range, and browser tools can crop one page or all of them. Most methods hide the outside area and leave the content inside the file.
How do I crop a PDF without Adobe?
On a Mac, use Preview. On an iPhone, use the crop control in the markup tools. On any device with a browser, use a local tool like our cropper. On Windows, SumatraPDF is a free desktop option.
How do I crop all pages of a PDF at once?
Choose the all-pages or whole-document option in your tool, set the crop frame once, and apply it. Acrobat does this in its Page Range setting, and SumatraPDF can apply the same crop to every page. Check a few pages afterward, because uneven scans can lose text.
Why is my cropped PDF still the same size?
A standard crop only changes the visible area, so the hidden content stays in the file. Compress the file after cropping if you need it smaller. A trim command, such as the one in SumatraPDF, removes content outside the box.
Is it safe to crop a PDF with personal data online?
It is safer when the tool processes the file locally and nothing is uploaded. For anything sensitive, also redact private details instead of only cropping them, and protect the file with a password before you share it.
